Win-win: More Cyclists and More Supporters!

We were excited to read the recent news that the number of NYC cyclists has increased by 14 percent since 2010, and also that a Quinnipiac University poll revealed that support for bike lanes has grown significantly.

A huge part of Bike New York’s mission is to promote bicycling, so this is thrilling info for us. It’s also wonderful news because another of our major goals is to promote safe, confident cycling, and studies have shown that the more cyclists are on the road, the safer it is for everyone. We can’t wait to see how the above numbers will jump even higher after bike share hits NYC!

We also appreciate the outpouring of support for bike lanes because, while we teach cyclists to ride safely and confidently in traffic regardless of whether or not there’s a bike lane, we’ve found that many cyclists are motivated to start riding in designated areas like bike lanes before they venture into “regular” streets. Thus, these lanes serve the incredibly valuable function of creating new cyclists, in turn improving New Yorkers’ health, air quality, and safety.

We like to think that our efforts here at Bike New York—everything from the Five Boro Bike Tour to smaller rides and events like Pedal Stops, and our free bicycle education classes—have played significant role in increasing the number of cyclists in the city, as well as the number of supporters.

We plan to keep on pedaling and promoting cycling—and we hope you do too!

Thanks, Transportation Nation, for the great reporting!
